Choosing how to study Japanese

A few things to know before exploring JLPTMatome.

Can I start learning Japanese as a beginner?

Yes. Start with hiragana and katakana, the two kana writing systems, then explore N5 kanji, vocabulary and grammar lessons. JLPTMatome organises material by level so you can choose a starting point that fits what you already know.

Which JLPT levels can I study?

JLPTMatome covers N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1. You can choose your level for lessons, flashcard drills and JLPT simulations, then return to topics you want to review.

What is a JLPT simulation?

It is a timed practice session covering vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening. After completing a session, review your answers and past results to see what needs more work. JLPTMatome simulations are study tools for exam preparation, not the official Japanese-Language Proficiency Test.

Can I use JLPTMatome without preparing for an exam?

Yes. The lessons and flashcards also support everyday Japanese study. Browse a topic, save lessons to a deck and practise what interests you. The community gives you a place to ask questions and share your learning experience.
